Any horror game that features deformed and nightmarish creatures is worth covering, especially with the Halloween gaming week finale today. In Tormented Souls, one plays young girl Caroline Walker who tries to find out why twin girls have disappeared at Winterlake, only to wake up naked and attached to medical devices in a bathtub. Soon she explores an apparently abandoned mansion, but with monstrosities roaming the hallways, she has to survive the night with any means (read: weapons) necessary.
Of course the inspirations are clear to see with the Silent Hill as well as Alone in the Dark series (see the reviews for the first three games and the fourth title) for the creature design and combat, although some of the monsters are reminiscent of The Suffering and The Suffering: Ties That Bind, too. There’s also a bit of The Medium in there, as one can switch between realities via mirrors to solve puzzles. All in all, it looks and sounds very familiar, but oh so terrifying and satisfying to play.
Tormented Souls was originally released in August 2021 and is now available DRM-free on GOG with a 10% launch discount that lasts until November 3, 2021, at 2 PM UTC.
