Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space was originally released between 2007 and 2008, being the second season of an episodic sequel to the 1993 classic Sam & Max: Hit the Road (see my review). It was probably the best Telltale Games ever did with the franchise and episodic storytelling combined with great puzzles. So I was pretty excited when the VR title This Time It’s Virtual was announced during gamescom 2020. But of course a remastered version of the whole series which started with Sam & Max Save The World in 2020 was even better.
As is to be expected, things go pretty crazy with the detective duo, involving Santa Claus, hell, and even time travel. The five-episodes structure remains, but the remaster obviously has some welcome changes made to lighting, lip-sync, cinematography, audio, and music, in addition to a few other tweaks. The HD graphics certainly look stunning, which might also be down to the comic art style that never feels dated. So hopefully the third and final season will be given the same treatment and I can review them all in one go, something that I missed out on with the original Telltale titles.
The remastered game was originally released in December 2021 and is now available DRM-free on GOG with a 25% launch discount for those who already own Sam & Max Save The World, lasting until January 25, 2022, at 2 PM UTC. The soundtrack can also be bought, but without any discount, or one can simply buy the game+soundtrack bundle.
