StudioNAZE and Kagura Games‘ visual novel/RPG hybrid Sonia and the Hypnotic City might not be appropiate for everyone.

Maybe it’s because I’m currently reading A Guide to Japanese Role-Playing Games that I’m more open to this kind of genre, or maybe because Sonia and the Hypnotic City seems to be less time-consuming than what one usually expects of the genre. Be it as it may, the story itself is already weird, involving the titular Holy Knight who has to investigate a group of people hypnotizing mostly women to rob the city they live in.

As there’s an Unrated patch (that is region-locked), one can bet it’s not really child-friendly and caters for a special kind of audience. Reading the feature list, “run quests to earn money and upgrade Sonia” might already be hinting at something else, because one wonders what her side jobs are. Smut aside, it seems to be more like a visual novel with a bit of turn-based combat thrown in, but with less playtime and multiple endings, this might be an alternative to the 50-100+ hours JRPGs.

The game is out now on PC with a 10% launch discount that lasts until January 28, 2022, at 2 PM UTC.
