Skymachine Studios and Blowfish Studios‘ stealth action-adventure game Winter Ember brings back a niche genre with style.

Anyone who remembers the sublime Thief games (see the GOG special sale: “Extraordinary titles from Square Enix” or GOG release: “THIEF: Definitive Edition” articles) knows that hiding in the shadows is often the best and most satisfying way to kill or go around masses of enemies. Here it’s Arthur Artorias who survived a massacre that also destroyed his family’s history, resulting in a path of vengeance against a military religion group.

Arthur doesn’t go all out with guns blazing, but uses shadows and his various weapons, especially arrows that can be crafted in over 30 ways. Unlike some of the Thief titles, there’s no first-person but a third-person perspective, so comparisons to Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun in its visual design are valid. However, here one can develop 3 skill trees (stealth, combat, and utility) with over 70 passive and active skills, so there’s more emphasis on RPG gameplay with only one character at the center.

The game is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S with a 15% launch discount that lasts until April 26, 2022, at 2 PM UTC.
