Amazon Prime Video in March 2022 had a suprisingly different TV take on a 90ies slasher movie.

TV shows:
I Know What You Did Last Summer (Season 1) [8/10]
I Know What You Did Last Summer wasn’t the greatest horror flick in 1997 (see more about it and the sequels in October around this Halloween), because it wasn’t as imaginative as Scream (see Halloween 2015 Movie Special, Day 1: “Scream 1-4”). Instead it simply relied on a man in a raincoat killing teenagers with a hook after they covered up a tragic accident.

The TV show follows the Lois Duncan book premise, but soon turns into something much more disturbing, as it involves drug abuse, gay relationships, and a stolen identity themes. The latter is obviously the more intriguing part of a storyline that is branched into 8 episodes. While a few feel a bit long and the characters aren’t the most likable or memorable at first (although there are some very quirky ones later on, including an obnoxious housekeeper and a rather dumb police officer), the show excels in building tension and delivering more twists than the whole movie trilogy combined, making it a surprise hit with some especially brutal kills and an unexpectedly vicious ending.
It’s amazing to think that the last time I watched anything on Amazon Prime Video was in December 2020, but maybe the Amazon Originals are worth investigating, as I Know What You Did Last Summer so aptly proved.
