GOG releases 4 classic games from Meridian4

GOG adds 4 new games to its DRM-free catalogue thanks to publisher Meridian4.

The cooperation between the two companies has led to quite a few releases this year (see the GOG releases 2 new games from Meridian4 and GOG releases 3 games from Meridian4 articles), but it seems there is much more in the works.

Space Hack, originally developed by Rebelmind in 2005, is a sci-fi action-RPG in the vein of Diablo about the colony ship Maximus which is invaded by aliens that start feeding on its people.

Of course there’s a hero in the form of a soldier who can save the day or rather the colonists by getting himself and whoever he meets along the way to the escape pods’ safety, resulting in lots of hacking-slashing-shooting scenarios.

Larva Mortus, done by Rake in Grass in 2009, is a top-down shooter with a Gothic horror touch, tasking the player to take on the role of an agent who is well-versed in exorcism and combat and destroys dark forces in the 19th century.

The action takes place in catacombs that are procedurally generated, and while there doesn’t seem to be much else going on besides killing lots of various monsters, it’s a cathartic experience for those who simply want to have short bursts of gory fun.

Those who want to think more about puzzles will find Nikopol: Secrets of the Immortals as a good alternative, as it’s an adventure game by White Birds Productions in 2008. The company was best known as being heralded by Benoit Sôkal, the comic artist and designer of the Syberia series who sadly passed away last year.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that it’s based on a series of graphic novels set in France in 2023, introducing the player to a strange sci-fi tale about a pyramid-shaped ship appearing in the sky, leading to a quest for immortality or anarchy.

Rhiannon: Curse of the Four Branches is another first-person adventure game from 2008, but developed by Arberth Studios which was unfortunately stopped distributing the game in the digital space of the EU independently (see the website info).

It’s inspired by Welsh myths and legends, telling the story about Rhiannon who starts to hear and see things in her family’s remote farm, but that aren’t really there, it seems. Weaving together paranormal activities with magic and folklore sounds a bit like Barrow Hill: Curse of the Ancient Circle and Barrow Hill: The Dark Path (see the reviews for the first and second title), but with less walking around in darkness.

All 4 games are now available DRM-free on GOG with individual launch discounts that last until tomorrow, May 27, 2022.
