These days it’s difficult to use old terms like “adventure game”, as it still hangs on concepts like puzzle solving. Being more in line with cinematic storytelling, South of the Circle presents a world in which real life choices are the center of it all. As Cambridge academic Peter, one tries to find help in Cold War Antarctica after crashlanding there. With enough time for contemplating his life, he remembers his past and what choices he has made.
This entails a love story with fellow academic Clara and what he promised to her. Torn between a career and true life, it’s a situation most people can relate to. Gameplay-wise, one shouldn’t expect any puzzles, but rather long dialogues and exploration, but in a linear fashion. If the choices one makes have an impact on the overall plot development and outcome remains to be seen, though.
