GOG free game: “Lovecraft’s Untold Stories”

GOG’s The GOG Sale is still in motion and offers some chills in summer thanks to Blini Games and Fulqrum Publishing‘s horror action-RPG roguelite Lovecraft’s Untold Stories.

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories is certainly an unexpected freebie during this time of the year, as it would be more appropriate for Halloween. But one can’t have enough Lovecraftian games, so it’s a welcome surprise. Based on the cosmic horror author’s short stories, the game throws the main character (of which there are 5 to choose from) in the middle of the Great Old Ones’ endeavor to take over the world with lots of monsters and cultists to fight in creepy locations.

Levels are randomly generated, so one knows even less what lies around the next corner or in the next room. As each character (private detective, witch, thief, professor, and a ghoul) has different abilities, there’s enough variety for multiple playthroughs. Despite the source material being more subtle in its creation of foreboding horror, one constantly engages in brutal fights which usually result in quite a bit of gore if one comes out as the winner. However, the pixel art and sound design is appropriate for the subject matter, as both convey dreadful moments in spades, and it’s a given that losing sanity is not a good thing in the world of Lovecraft, even if one carries around some big guns.

Lovecraft’s Untold Stories can be downloaded for free until tomorrow, August 31, 2022, at 1 PM UTC. The GOG Sale runs until September 5, 2022, at 10 PM UTC.
