Curious Fate and Akupara Games‘ turn-based fantasy strategy-RPG Absolute Tactics: Daughters of Mercy shows the classic genre a few new tricks.

It’s clear from the get-go that the game is inspired by Final Fantasy Tactics in presentation and gameplay, although there’s something to be said about the unique premise of hero Huxley defending his home against an invading army with his dog Max and other companions they might pick up along the way.

The hand-drawn anime characters and backgrounds sure look lovely detailed, but it’s probably the gameplay that is even more interesting, as it’s not all about clearing each level from enemies: war levels that have multiple units to take control of, puzzles that have to be solved, and traps that have to be overcome. Come to think of it, these might not necessarily be groundbreaking ideas, as other games have done them before, but it certainly beats level grinding and doing the same thing for hours.

The game is out now on PC and Nintendo Switch with a 10% launch discount that lasts until September 22, 2022, at 1 PM UTC.
