Terrible Toybox and Devolver Digital‘s classic adventure game Return to Monkey Island finally hits DRM-free shores on GOG.

It was a bit surprising that Return to Monkey Island didn’t receive a DRM-free release, as it was exclusive to Steam and Nintendo Switch at first. Unlike the previous titles (which I already reviewed), this is all the more surprising, because the developer’s last game, the terrific Thimbleweed Park, showed up on the store, too.

No matter the reason why Guybrush Threepwood comes late to the DRM-free party, now everyone can enjoy the return of adventure gaming’s great. After I had a glimpse at the game during gamescom 2022 and my expectations having been somehow been diminished by the first screenshots, I admit that now I find the overall look quite appealing (although the character designs are still grotesque to my eyes). Thanks to the art of Knights and Bikes, the graphics somehow fit the humor and puzzles which seem to stay true to the source material. This can also be said about the music of the composers of the first two Monkey Island titles.

Return to Monkey Island was originally released in November 2022 and is now available DRM-free on GOG with a 20% launch discount that lasts until December 5, 2022, at 2 PM UTC.
