Wildboy Studios and Untold Tales‘s emotional exploration adventure game ATONE: Heart of the Elder Tree mixes North mythologies with rhythm action parts to great effect.

North myths have inspired so many games in the recent past that it’s sometimes difficult to see through the snow-covered landscapes protagonists have to walk or fight through. Here one plays as Estra, the daughter of mankind’s last great leader, who tries to protect the sacred Elder Tree after the Gods have left Midgard.

A deeply emotional tale about the connection to the world or to one’s father has already been used in the God of War remake, but there’s no need for bloodshed or gore in the fighting sequences here. These are surprisingly similar to titles like Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution, as each won battle means another song that can be used for the next opponent. Judging from the beautiful synth soundtrack and a unique art style, it becomes clear that it’s a game that does things a little bit differently.

The game is out now on PC and Nintendo Switch with a 20% launch discount (or 33% for the Switch version) that lasts until February 10, 2023, at 6 PM UTC.
