There are way too many roguelites or roguelikes with dark pixel art or background stories, and while this game uses the forces of darkness as an antagonist, its world Orbis that has to be freed is just as colorful and charming as its hero, Ignis, who is literally a very special coal tasked with restoring the Eternal Flame.

It’s wonderful to behold how swift the little flame dashes around and engages in combat, involving punches, stomps, and other attacks. Unlocking various skills and passive abilities offers the expected gameplay-style variety, but there’s more to the game than just simple button bashing. Looking for energy is essential to restore the Eternal Flame, but it also serves as one’s life energy, so a neat risk-and-reward system is at play if one wants to stay alive and transfer enough energy back to the Fire Camp to progress. Visiting the Vulpis Village also helps to find rest, enhance abilities, but also rebuild and upgrade structures with collected resources, adding even more strategy to the gameplay.
