sunset visitor and Fellow Traveller‘s sci-fi adventure game 1000xRESIST mixes narrative and gameplay styles for a unique storytelling experience.
It’s no secret that games have become so cinematic that it’s difficult to set them apart from movies, and this title proves that one can deliver just as many emotions as in an anime or animated full-length feature. The premise is intriguing, as one plays as the Watcher who relives and interprets the memories of the ALLMOTHER, the only survivor of a catastrophe that wiped out humanity. It’s a bit more complicated than that, involving that girl’s clones called Sisters, but of course one soon learns what really happened.
Part third-person adventure, part visual novel and first-person walking simulator, the game clearly focuses on telling its story and questioning life and authority. As the development team mainly consists of Asian-Canadians experienced in dance, theatre, music, film, visual arts, and new media arts, it’s obvious that the presentation is something very special. With inspirations like Yoko Taro’s weird genre mix NieR:Automata and anime of Satoshi Kon like Perfect Blue or Naoko Yamada’s A Silent Voice, the lines between cinema and gaming have once again been blurred.
The game is out now on PC and Nintendo Switch with a 10% launch discount that lasts until May 23, 2024, at 3 PM UTC.
