As silly as the title sounds, CremaGames‘ old-school FPS Immortal Redneck is a lot of roguelite fun.
If you still remember the bonkers Redneck Rampage in which two not-so-bright fellows tried to save Earth from aliens by shooting, drinking, and eating everything, then this game should be a quick reminder that crude humor isn’t lost in the FPS genre yet. This time a redneck tourist finds himself mummified in ancient Egypt after an accident and has to fight his way through three pyramids of Giza populated with all sorts of monsters.
Roguelite elements like randomly generated dungeons, classes, skills, and permanent death but with gameplay progression are mixed up with classic gunplay using 50 different weapons. Among these aren’t only traditional firearms, but also magical, mythological, futuristic or crazy ones like a Potato Launcher. Nine playable classes with different skill sets mean that players can switch between them, depending on what is more efficient at the moment, while over 100 scroll modifiers can change the game, e.g. turning enemies into chickens or reducing one’s speed of movement. Buying equipment and supplies at a merchant’s shop is as essential as building a skill tree to beat over 35 enemies, including two bosses per pyramid. All in all, it might not have the best graphics and the oneliners could become repetitive, but being able to finally have some fun in a genre that has become too narrative-driven can only be a good thing.
The game is now available for PC with a 20% launch discount that will last until August 29, 1 PM UTC. Console versions for PS4 and Xbox One are also announced.
