There have been many game reviews and news lately, but of course my other passion (besides books and music, the latter of which I have to cover as well at some point) is movies. So what better way than having a look at the official Ratchet & Clank trailer?
For those who’re unfamiliar with the franchise that spanned many games on exclusive Sony consoles, suffice it to say that this is the perfect fit for an animated movie, as it’s already an animated movie most of the time. Starring the wise-cracking fox-like creature (a Lombax) Ratchet and the neurotic robot Clank, together with the wannabe superhero Captain Qwark, it’s saving the world time against the evil Chairman Drek (voiced by Paul Giamatti) and also robot lieutenant Victor Von Ion (no other than Sylvester Stallone).
Now if this sounds all generic and rather Saturday afternoon (or morning) cartoon silliness, then it’s because it is. The game series never took itself too seriously, and it also never told the most complicated stories. What it had though were awesome fights, good and not so good jokes. So if you can live with that, the movie will probably deliver. In 3D the perfect animation and colorful worlds Ratchet and his team visit will surely come to life.
Hopefully, Ratchet & Clank will be a success with even more fun game characters following suit. Considering that there are a LOT of platformer heroes who put some animated movies to shame (not Pixar material, though), this could be the beginning of something very cool. By the look of the Blockade Entertainment website, there are even Cut the Rope (or Om Nom) and Sly Cooper flicks in the works, but with no release dates yet. With Ratchet & Clank scheduled for April 29 2016, there’s enough time to play through the original games, though.
