Survival horror games usually work quite well with a first-person or third-person perspective, but it seems that using a top-down one is even more effective. Unlike many more action-focused shooters, this is a much more subtle affair that is genuinely scary. It’s difficult to pinpoint what the actual story is about, except for a man trying to survive in a hostile and disturbing wood environment full of monsters to evade or kill and loot to find.
Being part roguelike top-down survival horror and adventure game with RPG elements, the game isn’t all about shooting or hacking and slashing, but it’s also about exploring a setting that is surreal and frightening. Day- and nighttime aren’t simply graphical changes, as one can only move around in relative safety during one and then has to hide or fight back during the other. With a fantastic sound design and graphics that might not be AAA material but efficient enough in playing with light and shadows, it’s a refreshing take on a genre that usually relies on jumpscares and running around, shooting everything. Making decisions that can change the fate of the world’s weird inhabitants and story is also a nice feature, although it remains to be seen how deep the characters and plot actually are.
The game was originally crowdfunded on Indiegogo in 2013, then premiered on Early Access in 2014, and is now finally available on PC. If you’re still not sure what to expect, check out the three trailers that are also quite unique, with one being a live-action version and the other an interactive trailer. The title has also a 10% discount that will last until August 24, 7PM UTC.
