Footprints Games and Adventure Productions present a comic noir point-and-clicker with Detective Gallo.
Hard-boiled cops or private investigators aren’t new, but a hard-boiled chicken (intentional joke or not?) is rather rare, medium rare (sorry). The premise is as ridiculous as it’s ingenious: a feathered, sarcastic detective trying to solve a case about plant murders. The city the investigation takes place in is even stranger with all kinds of wacky characters to interrogate, while puzzles also have to be solved in the classic adventure game style.
hand-illustrated and hand-animated graphics are still lovely to see in modern games, especially adventure titles, and Detective Gallo seems to hit all the right notes with beautiful character and background art, complemented by very good voice acting and a great soundtrack. The humor also balances the ridiculous with the serious tone of the grumpy protagonist. It has been a while since the noir atmosphere has been combined with comedy, and even if this title might not be on par with the timeless Grim Fandango, it at least looks and sounds pretty amazing, so hopefully the puzzles and story will be less frustrating and more entertaining, although one shouldn’t expect the thrills and gory kills of the Giallo genre.
The game is out now on PC with a 15% launch discount that will last until June 6, 5pm UTC. It’s also worth noting that the jazz soundtrack is included for free when you buy the title on GOG.
