Brian Fargo’s classic RPG series The Bard’s Tale receives a rejuvenation thanks to InXile Entertainment and Krome Studio’s remaster of the fantasy trilogy.
While Brian Fargo’s company is still very busy with the recent releases of The Mage’s Tale, the new PS Vita/PS4 version of the action-RPG reboot, and The Bard’s Tale IV, the time might just be right to revisit the classic titles. Originally from the 80ies, there have been quite some changes in this new edition, although story and gameplay remain largely the same.
Creating an adventuring party in the first volume and playing with it across all three volumes is already a great way to involve the player, and there’s lots to do, to be sure. Saving a city from an evil wizard, reforging the legendary Destiny Wand, and confronting a mad god should provide plenty of reason to embark on the journey. Being able to play as male or female is a first, though. Other welcome additions are automapping, spell access, and updated equipment/inventory management. The graphics have also received an overhaul, but the art direction seems to have been preserved.
The first volume in the series is available now on PC, with the others being added for free soon. So in fall The Bard’s Tale II: The Destiny Knight and later this year The Bard’s Tale III: Thief of Fate should be playable, just enough time before digging into the fourth installment.
