Windy Hill aka Brandon Goins and 2Dimensions‘s Orphan mixes classic sci-fi storytelling with action-platformer/adventure gameplay.
The basic premise of the game is that a young boy wakes up after an alien invasion has taken over Earth, and he seems to be the only survivor. So while he tries to find other signs of life, he also wreaks havoc against the alien machines for revenge.
There isn’t much to go on from the spare press release info, but judging from the trailer, the game is as much about exploring the desolate Earth, as it’s about blasting gigantic aliens or defending against them with various weapons and gadgets. So despite the obvious narrative and visual references to LIMBO, i.e. having a monochromatic boy fight against all odds in a hostile world, it’s still quite a different game due to its sci-fi setting and tools of destruction.
Still one shouldn’t compare it to arcade run-and-gun games, as the atmosphere is much darker and there seems to be more about the boy’s journey of discovery than simply throwing enemies after enemies at him. Taking into consideration that the game has been in development since 2014 by just one person, it looks pretty amazing, as there’s something awe-inspiring to see gigantic machines walking around. With varied environments that aren’t as obscure as Playdead‘s influential platformer, it’s literally more down to earth and would make for a great sci-fi animated movie as well.
